The temple Nanzen-ji was founded in 1291 on the site of retired emperor Kameyama's villa. Main temple of the Nanzenji School of the Rinzai sect. The oldest buildings is from the 16th century.  The temple gate San-mon is very large. There is 12 subtemples as Konchi-in, Hojo (the abbots quarter) with a fine garden ans Nanzen-in.
